Cash games and tournaments may use the same poker rules, but they create very different time, bankroll and risk decisions.

Cash games

Chips represent cash value. Blinds usually stay fixed, and players can generally join or leave between hands subject to table rules. A lost stack can be rebought, which makes pre-set loss limits especially important.

Tournaments

Players pay a buy-in for tournament chips. Blinds rise on a schedule, and play continues until elimination or completion. Payouts are concentrated near the top, so long periods without a cash are possible.

Which format fits?

Choose based on time available, comfort with variance and a fixed entertainment budget—not on hopes of profit. A beginner who needs a predictable stopping time may prefer a short cash session with a strict cap; a low-cost single-entry tournament can cap the entry spend but not the time.

Before sitting down

  • Know the rake or tournament fee.
  • Set a maximum loss and session time.
  • Understand rebuys, add-ons and late registration.
  • Do not move up in stakes to recover a loss.
Format does not remove riskSkill can influence poker results, but short-term variance remains substantial and fees reduce returns.

One rule above every tactic

Only gamble with money you can afford to lose. Set limits before you start, never chase losses, and stop if play no longer feels optional.
